Achill Sound National School is situated in Achill Sound village on Achill Island. It is a picturesque rural setting beside Achill Sound Church. It caters for pupils of mixed gender. We have a wide range of school policies pertaining to curriculum and organisational areas, which are available on request. Achill Sound N. S. offers an excellent opportunity for pupils to enjoy their primary education in a friendly, welcoming and pupil-centred atmosphere. We are closely connected to the local community and have excellent relationship with all the partners.

Surroundings:

Our school is within walking distance of many amenities such as, the library, playground, shops, the greenway, church, community hall, Secondary School, fire station and coast guard station, all of which contribute to the learning opportunities of the children which ensure strong community links. Our school is located on a quiet road which enable our children to walk to and from school.

The school has a large yard space which incorporates a basketball court and a sheltered area with two picnic benches which can also be used for an outdoor classroom.

Each classroom is equipped with an interactive whiteboard and at least one laptop.

Classes:

There are two class teachers teaching a four-year cycle i.e. Infants to Second Class; and Third to Sixth Class. Depending on our numbers it may be necessary to have different class groupings.

Support Services:

One Special Education Teacher, shared with one other school in the Parish, this offers opportunities to give added supports to pupils who would benefit from extra support. Currently we also have a teacher providing additional EAL hours.

History:

Our school has two names, Scoil Mhuire gan Smál or Achill Sound National School. The current building was built in 1966 as a two-room school. In 1989 a further two classrooms and an office space were added. The school was previously governed by the sisters of Mercy and is adjacent to the old convent. From 2004 the school has been a lay institution.

Opening Hours:

School opening time is 9.20am finish at 2pm for Junior/Senior Infants and 3pm for all other classes.
